It has been one week so far that I stayed away from sugar! I’m proud I made it and did not quit at the first opportunity to indulge in some sweet treat. I feel good and am determined to also conquer the next week, the week after next and all weeks still to come this year.
The key really is to find healthy alternatives that you love and want to eat so often that there is no space left for sugary fare. I’m thinking fruit plates, baked potato fries and my current favorite dish red lentil curries. Those foods fill you up and leave you satisfied so there is no need for dessert.
Surprisingly, I didn’t have many cravings this week. I expected it to be much worse after all the stuff I ate around Christmas time. Weirdly, I had a craving for unsweetened whipped cream twice this week. Which is weird, because I usually NEVER eat that stuff. The brain can be funny sometimes. And by the way, I did not eat the cream!
What I eat
I ate very simple. Warm oatmeal porridge with fruit every morning. Lunch was usually a big, mixed salad from the salat bar at work. Dinner was my favorite meal this week. I fixed different typed of red lentil curries and soups almost every night in my instant pot. I am in LOVE with red lentil curries. They are so filling, creamy, full of plant protein and quick and easy to prepare. I usually served rice with the curries.
How I feel
I can truly say I feel great in my body. I guess it is not only the absence of sugar, but also all the good foods I have eaten in its place. I really focused on getting super many veggies and plant protein in. Besides food I also made it a habit to do some yoga every night. (Yoga Revolution from Yoga with Adriene that is). It’s a good practise to wind down at night and focus on the wellbeing of the mind and soul.
What I learnt
It’s helpful to include some generous serving of nut butter or tahini in your breakfast when you are super hungry. It helps to satisfy the hunger and keeps you full all morning (goodbye cravings!). I like to do that on weekends when I don’t eat lunch at my usual workweek lunch time, but later in the afternoon. On regular (non-workout) days I usually don’t have nut butters as they can pack on many calories, especially when I’m sitting on my butt most of the day at work!
Favorte Recipe of the Week
Morrocan Lentil Soup from Forks over Knives.
This soup has become a staple in our kitchen! We love it with a side of rice.
